New Asphalt
Asphalt is a durable and affordable option when installing driveways, parking lots and walkways. Asphalt is an especially appealing option for areas needing semi-temporary walking and driving surfaces. However, it is important to keep in mind that while asphalt is durable, it can become softer in extreme heat and can crack in cold climates where it experiences repeated freezing and thawing.
Asphalt also requires an extensive amount of time to fully cure. While it is safe to walk on asphalt after just 24 hours, any asphalt surface should be used with care and caution over the first 30 days after installation. It is best to not leave vehicles parked for extended periods of time or in the same spot. Turning a steering wheel and even using a bicycle kickstand can damage the surface on newly installed asphalt. This is especially true on days with extreme heat.
Recycled Asphalt Millings
Recycled asphalt, or asphalt millings, work well for driveways and roadways with limited traffic. Asphalt millings are durable and affordable. The material itself is low cost and maintenance expenses are minimal as asphalt millings hold up in even the most demanding climates. Asphalt millings are also the environmentally friendly option.
Asphalt is not biodegradable. Asphalt millings that are not reused or repurposed ends up a landfill. The production of new asphalt also causes additional pollution. When possible, it is best to reuse old asphalt and asphalt millings in construction projects.
